Vietnam interested in Cambodia's Funan Techo canal project

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam is very interested in the Funan Techo canal project and respects the legitimate interests of Cambodia under the 1995 Mekong Agreement, relevant regulations of the Mekong River Commission, and the time-honored friendly neighborliness between the two nations, said a spokesperson for the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Pham Thu Hang was speaking on Sunday in response to a reporter’s question about Cambodia’s recent statements regarding the project. 

She said Vietnam always treasures and gives top priority to the good neighborliness, traditional friendship, and comprehensive, long-term, and sustainable cooperation with Cambodia, hoping the relationship will continue to deepen in multiple fields for the benefit of the two countries’ people.

Ms. Hang said Vietnam hopes Cambodia will continue to coordinate closely with Vietnam and other countries in the Mekong River Commission to share information and fully evaluate the impact of this project on water and natural resources and the ecological environment of the Mekong sub-region to harmonize the interests of riverine countries, and ensure effective management and use of the Mekong River for sustainable development of the basin.
