The Central Highlands has long been a great inspiration for many songwriters. Popular songs about the region include “Central Highlands love song” by musician Hoang Van, “Central Highlands flame” by Tran Tien, and “Ban Me coffee” by Nguyen Cuong.

In recent years, musicians have been more creative in writing songs about the Central Highlands by combining its folk music with contemporary music.

“To write music or songs featuring an area, the musician needs to do a lot of research on its folk music and culture to successfully reflect its typical features in the music,” said Songwriter Manh Tri from the Central Highland province of Dak Lak.

According to musician A Duh from the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum, in order to preserve and promote Central Highlands music, new music still needs to be based on the region’s typical folk melody.

“It is essential for musicians to write new songs but still keep the typical feature of the Central Highlands music,” said A Duh.

At a workshop on Central Highlands contemporary music, participants discussed ways to preserve and promote folk music from the region in modern times.

“Musicians have shown their concern about how to preserve and promote the Central Highlands music in modern time. We think of writing new songs about the region, combining new tunes and covering new topics,” said Do Hong Quan, Chairman of the Vietnam Musicians' Association.
